On Monday afternoon, the Massachusetts Legislature sent a $43.1 billion state budget for FY 2020 to Governor Charlie Baker. We are very pleased to report that the budget included a $250,000 appropriation in support of financial literacy grants (to be administered by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education), to fulfill the recently passed legislation that created this program.
After decades of MassSaves’ sustained support for financial literacy education, the adoption of line item 7010-1194 was a major victory. This week, we will be sending a letter to Gov. Baker urging him to include this funding in his final budget and continue this victory. Join us in showing your support of the appropriation by calling or emailing the governor and urge him to support line item 7010-1194. Governor Baker has only ten days to approve or veto the budget, so please show your support soon.
MassSaves would like to thank Sen. Jamie Eldridge (D-Acton), who introduced Amendment 206 (and which was co-sponsored by ten other senators), as well as Rep. Alice Peisch (D-Wellesley), the House Chair of the Joint Committee on Education who was a key supporter, as were the six members of the joint budget conference committee.
